This is a working draft. Short version: we collect the little we need to run a bidding map and take a payment, and the parts you bid with are public on purpose.
1. Who we are

2. What we collect
- What you give us in the bid form: your username or handle, company name, company logo image, company link, and anything else you type in.
- Payment information: handled by our third-party payment processor. We receive a confirmation and limited details such as the name on the payment and the last four digits. We do not receive or store full card numbers.
- Automatic technical data: basic request logs (IP address, browser user-agent, timestamps, pages requested) and aggregate, privacy-respecting analytics of page views.
- Cookies and local storage: an essential cookie to keep your session working, and small local-storage values for UI preferences. No third-party advertising cookies.
3. How we use it
- To display your placement on the map, in the newsfeed and in the ledger.
- To process, confirm and, where needed, refund payments.
- To run the live newsfeed and keep the ledger accurate.
- To detect and prevent fraud, abuse and rule-breaking content.
- To keep the Site running, debug it, and understand rough traffic levels.
4. What is public
By design, when you win a state the Site publicly shows your handle, company name, logo, link, the state, and the bid amount, on the map, in the newsfeed and in the landholders ledger. Do not submit anything you are not happy to have shown publicly.
5. Who we share it with
- Our payment processor, to charge you and handle refunds.
- Our database and hosting providers (including Convex and our web host), who process data on our instructions to run the Site.
- Authorities or advisers where we are legally required to, or to protect the Site.
We do not sell your personal information.
6. Retention
Placements and ledger entries are kept for as long as the Site runs, because they are the point of the Site. Technical logs are kept for a limited period and then deleted or aggregated. Payment records are kept as long as we need them for tax and accounting.
7. Your choices and rights
You can ask us to correct or take down the content you submitted; taking down a placement does not refund the bid. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal data, or to object to certain processing. To exercise any of these, email hello@unitedstatesof.lol.
8. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Children
The Site is not intended for anyone under 18 and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If you believe a child has given us data, contact us and we will delete it.
10. International users
The Site and its providers are based in the United States. If you use the Site from elsewhere, you understand your data will be processed in the US.
11. Changes
We may update this policy. Material changes will be reflected in the date at the top of this page.
